Job Description

Lead communications for the Consumer Segment of SunTrust Banks Inc., reporting to the Chief Communications Officer and supporting the SunTrust Vice Chairman and Co-Chief Operating Officer. Manage small team covering internal and external communications for business units such as retail banking, mortgage, and private wealth management. Develop and execute new ways to reach audiences and build the SunTrust brand, teaming with business leaders and marketing partners.


Develop integrated communications strategies for the full Consumer ecosystem at SunTrust, Inc. to advance the company’s purpose, communicate the Consumer competitive advantage and build national recognition for the SunTrust brand.


Media Relations - Identify and promote SunTrust banking insights, solutions and services, using traditional and social media channels. Develop key messages and proactive PR plans. Write and issue press releases. Target and pitch stories to business and trade press. Collaborate with others in SunTrust Marketing on messages, timing and approach. Monitor coverage on proactive PR or related industry issues of interest to line of business. Prepare leader for external speaking engagements and media interviews.


Issues Management - Handle media inquiries and issues as needed, including developing company responses and statements. Vet issues and responses with business/legal as needed. Develop client letters as it relates to reputational risk, as needed.


Manage communications professionals and agency resources supporting the Consumer Segment and participate in leadership routines. Collaborate with Marketing and Social Media representatives.

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree in Communications or Journalism. 10 years of experience in corporate communications, agency, marketing or a related business role. Core business acumen; ability to analyze situations; act with urgency; make fact-based decisions; and create/execute communication strategies. Strong writing/editorial, listening and issues management capabilities. Effective project management and communication measurement skills.

Preferred Qualifications: Master’s Degree Knowledge of the financial services industry. Experience with broad-based and business/marketing-integrated communication projects.
